If you’ve spent any time listening to Jehnny Beth’s music – either as the voice of post-punk band Savages or in her many other collaborative projects – there are some things you can imagine her 16-year-old self doing, and other things, less so.
Growing up in the French city of Poitiers, Jehnny recalls turning 16 at the dawn of a new millennium, listening to Placebo, Smashing Pumpkins and David Bowie, of course, but also playing in a jazz band, starring in a film and almost pursuing a serious career in acting, as her theatre-director parents would have loved her to.
The thing is, when you’re a Bauhaus fan, the lure of an extra drab Northampton can leave a powerful mark on a young mind.
